A not-for-profit organisation

Welcome to The Old Station Club, Stamford Bridge, a part of the Stamford Bridge Sports Halls Association. You can read more about our History here.

It is the home of the Platform 66 Youth Club and Heritage Centre, the Indoor Sports Hall and the Club.

Our 1300+ members club exists to generate funds for the upkeep of our buildings and to provide facilities for the local community.

We welcome individuals and groups to contact us if you think our facilities might help fulfill your needs.

In the following pages you will find details of our facilities and how to use them.
There is so much to see, something for everyone, in a delightful setting. We have a range of rooms and lovely outdoor seating area for every event, with food and drinks available, including two guest hand-pulled ales which are changed every week. SKY Sports and TNT Sport are shown in three different rooms.

Our Heritage Centre details local history, from the Romans through the famous battle of Stamford Bridge to the coming of the railway. Our centrepiece is the Stamford Bridge Tapestry depicting the 1066 battle that occurred between King Harold Godwinson and King Hardrada, after winning the Battle, King Harold and his soldiers marched south to Hastings where he was defeated by William the Conqueror. Our tapestry creators took their inspiration from the Bayeux Tapestry detailing the events leading to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The club sits alongside Route 66 the Sustrans cycleway from Beverley to Manchester. The Club is open every evening and from 12 noon on a Saturday and Sunday .

There is ample parking in our own car park and children's playground opposite the club.

The Platform 66 Heritage Centre is the latest addition to the facilities at the Old Station Club. An unused part of the old Station house has been converted into a Heritage Centre and Youth Club, this has been an ongoing project over a number of years and was completed in 2020, but continues to develop.

Stamford Bridge has an important part in English history. In 1066 King Harold defeated the Viking army at Stamford Bridge and learnt after the battle that the Normans had begun their invasion of England. So Harold raced with this army to Hastings on the south coast where Harold was killed and his army defeated.

The Platform 66 Heritage Centre is the home to the Stamford Bridge Tapestry, which like the medieval Bayeux tapestry has been painstakingly worked by members of the local community. It tells the story of the King Harold`s exploits and is displayed in glass cabinets on the walls of Platform 66. It is a fascinating piece of work and is the centrepiece of the Centre`s archive.

There is also a pictorial timeline of village life from the Roman period up till the present day. As this archive is housed in the Old Station building there is lots of information about the local railway and the impressive viaduct that crosses the river close by.

In 2024 we added the standards of the Stamford Bridge British Legion branch, these are now permanently displayed within Platform 66.
Our beautiful tapestry is open for viewing by visitors and is managed by Friends of the Tapestry.

We are able to offer private visits to the Tapestry with a talk on the history of the Battle of Stamford Bridge, how the Tapestry came about and how it was stitched.

If you are interested in visiting as a group we can offer a Wednesday in the daytime with tea, coffee and cake with a speaker for £7.00 a head.

To visit as a group, please contact our bookings secretary Ann on 01759 371521 or 07769702399 or email annchatten@btinternet.com
Lunches can also be arranged in advance.

If you just want to come as an individual then Platform 66 is open for tea, coffee and biscuits on most Tuesdays from 10am to 2pm. It is possible that there will be someone to answer your queries but we cannot guarantee it unless you book as a group. If you are coming on a Saturday then it is recommended that you contact the Club on 01759 371204 as Platform 66 is occasionally booked for private functions.

OUR HISTORY image
The Stamford Bridge Sports Hall Association Ltd. was first registered in 1983 as a ‘not for profit, limited by Guarantee company’. The closure of the Beverley to York railway line in 1965 followed by some years of neglect had seen the old station buildings falling into a state of disrepair. With the population of the village growing, a group of dedicated Stamford Bridge residents saw an opportunity to make use of the large goods shed (warehouse) located at the end of the station yard by converting it into an indoor sports facility. Following a great deal of effort by volunteers in clearing the site, fundraising and obtaining loans and grants etc. the facility became a reality and the Stamford Bridge Sports Hall was officially opened to the residents in 1985. The hall may be hired by the Old Station Club members for the playing of indoor football, badminton, basketball and other suitable activities.
Work was then started on the Station House itself to convert part of this into a ‘Members Only’ Social Club known as ‘The Old Station Club’, the revenue from which, being used towards the upkeep of the Sports Hall and The Old Station Building. This building has been extended over the years to arrive at the building seen today.
Both buildings are owned by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and are leased to the Association. As part of the lease the hall must be available, for use in the afternoons by the Stamford Bridge Schools. Free of charge.
